Photography: Internet Resources

Historical Information

History of Colour Photography - From the National Science and Media Museum, this blog outlines the history of color photography. It is a good place to get historical information on this medium.

Photographers’ Identities Catalog - Photographers’ Identities Catalog (PIC), from the New York Public Library, is a collection of biographical data for photographers, studios, manufacturers, and others involved in the production of photographic images, accessible via image visualizations.

News & Inspiration

Aperture Blog - From the magazine Aperture, this blog covers all things photography. Essays are pertinent to current events, exhibitions, emerging photographers and more.

Artsy - Photography - Artsy is a great place to look for information on artists or art movements. The site includes individual profiles of artists with biographical information, CVs and samples of work.

Creative Commons Search - The Creative Commons Search aggregates images that have different permissions for reuse. You can browse collections to find images that are available to use. You can also add your images to the site and assign permissions for how other people can use them.

Consider the Source

The internet provides open access to a tremendous amount of information, including peer reviewed, scholarly material.  However, be mindful of your sources. Consider the following:

Authority - Who is the author? What is their point of view?

Purpose - Why was the source created?

Publication & Format - Where was it published?

Relevance - How is it relevant to your research?

Date of Publication - When was it written?

Documentation - Did they cite their sources?
