Diversity & Inclusion Resources: Voting in Federal & Local Elections

Print and electronic resources related to diversity, equity, and inclusion available through the Library

Check Your Voter Information

Are you not sure if you're registered to vote? Or are you registered, but you're not sure where? Michigan's "Your Voter Information" website can help you figure it out!

Do Your Research!

All races on the ballot are important, not just the ones for the president or your congressperson. Remember to research the races ahead of time - you can view your ballot (you will need to input your address) and see non-partisan information about each of the candidates, for every race.

Questions?

Do you have questions about anything related to voting and elections? Please email Amy Lazet at alazet@ccsdetroit.edu.

You are now able to register to vote online!

Rules/Requirements:

  • Citizen of US
  • Resident of Michigan (must have lived in the city where you will be voting at least 30 days prior to the elections)
  • At least 18 by the time of the election
  • Michigan driver's license or state ID number
  • Last 4 digits of your social security number

If you don't have a Michigan driver's license or state ID, you can register via a paper copy of the form and mail it to your local clerk via the postal service.

Request an Absentee Ballot

You can now apply for an absent voter ballot online! You no longer need a reason to vote absentee, nor do you need to vote in person the first time after registering.

Rules/Requirements:

  • You must be registered to vote (see Register to Vote box on this page)
  • Last 4 digits of your social security number
  • Michigan driver's license or state ID number

Requesting a ballot means that the clerk will mail it via USPS to your address. You will then fill the ballot out by hand and either mail it back (please note: postage is $0.65, NOT $0.55) or deliver it to your clerk's office. If you choose to mail your ballot back, you MUST allow enough time for it to reach the clerk's office by 8 pm on election day. If you are able to drop it off at your clerk's office, you will have more time to submit the request. Again, it is very important that you allow enough time for the ballot to be mailed to you and for you to then mail it back.
