CCS Research Repository & Publications: CCS Artist Books

Covering research produced by the CCS community, this guide includes links to the institutional repository (CCS Research Repository), research publication PLUME, and CCS artist books

Participation & Copyright

  • Participation is open to any member of the CCS community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Fill out the form to indicate your interest
  • Participation is limited to 50 books each semester, first-come, first-served

You are welcome to use the pages to express creativity, whatever that means to you. You may choose to sketch, add photographs, or include written text; you are not limited to creating solely visual works.

  • Submitting work to the CCS Artist Book Collection does not require copyright transfer; the CCS Library will own the physical book but you retain copyright ownership
  • Submission to the project means granting CCS a nonexclusive license to make the book available to patrons in whatever format deemed best, but we will do our best to ensure you will always be credited as the creator of the work

The collection can be viewed in person at the Library in the Manoogian Visual Resource Center at the College for Creative Studies.

  • These books are intended to demonstrate the depth of creativity in the CCS community; some of the creators may be willing to have their work reused and cited, but not all
  • Please ask a Library staff member for more information on reusing content from specific books

Submission Process

  • When you sign up to participate in the Artist Book Collection via the form, you have the option to either select pick up at the Library or request a blank book be sent to the mailing address you provide
  • You can also create your own book following the guidelines listed above
  • If your book is digital, you may submit it via the form; all digital submissions must be PDFs and no bigger than 50 mb
  • You may drop your completed book off at the Library during open hours or mail it to the CCS Library
  • Please hand your book to a Library staff member; do not put it in the dropbox
  • If mailing, please use the following address: Library, 201 E. Kirby, Detroit MI 48202
  • You must fill out the form when submitting your book so we can catalog it accurately
  • After you return your book it will be cataloged, have a barcode attached, and placed in a clear bag for preservation purposes
  • After cataloging and processing, it will be placed on the shelf; all books submitted by the end of the semester will be available at some point in the following semester

Creation Guidelines

  • CCS Library can provide you with a blank book to unbind, rebind, or alter as long as the final version remains within the original dimensions of 5.5 x 8.5 inches and thinner than 1 inch when closed
  • Although your book must meet the size and content guidelines outlined here, you are not required to use our book. You must leave a space on the back of the book (2.25 x 0.75 in) for the barcode (for cataloging and tracking), however
  • You may submit an already created book, zine, etc. so long as it complies with these rules.

CCS Library reserves the right to not accept submissions which violate reasonable content standards. Please do not submit projects which glorify discrimination or sexual violence.

  • Your book should be able to withstand normal wear and tear
  • These books are intended to be read and handled by Library patrons; please account for the longevity of materials used, whether because they might smudge (charcoal, pastels) or come undone (organic materials affixed to the pages, glitter), etc.
  • Do not include hazardous or biohazardous materials (i.e. sharp objects, bodily fluids, etc.).

Please be aware that books in this collection cannot be maintained in pristine condition.

  • You may create a digital book that will be printed by the Library (black & white or color) and placed in the physical collection
  • The final product should be a maximum of 5.5 x 8.5 inches, thinner than 1 inch when closed, and no more than 12 pages
  • You may submit your digital book via the form; there is space to attach a file at the bottom of the form
  • All digital submissions must be PDFs and no more than 50 mb
