For Faculty: Designing Research Assignments

This guide provides faculty with information about everything related to the CCS Libraries

CCS Library: Best Practices for Designing Research Assignments. Student success and retention: integrating research and exposure to the library early in a student's academic tenure aids in student retention (see citation) and provides building blocks for continued success as classess become increasingly more complex. Student interactions with CCS Librarians help establish a relationship that will benefit future research projects. Electronic resources for online learning: utilizing online resources from CCS Library for hybrid and online courses supports the pedagogical needs of these teaching methods. Engaging with local collections: using print or digital resources available through the library allows for: greater acccessibility for differently abled students via locally available online resources; lower barriers to research by having resources availlable at the home institution; consistent and longer-term access to resources, enabling deeper research; greater instruction from CCS faculty or Librarians on how to conduct research. Inspiration and research beyond local collections: there are pedagogical reasons to explore unique collections beyond our local holdings, such as the pursuit of research using primary source material. Unable to find what you need? If faculty need materials not available institutionally, they should communicate their needs to the Library: faculty requests help build the Library's collection and ensure a rich selection of resources for future classes and students to draw from; the Library Director is also available for pedagogical consultations and to provide recommendations for alternate resources for materials we are unable to secure. Citation: studies have found that students who make use of library resources and services have higher retention rates and GPA - see Krista M. Soria, Jan Fransen and Shane Nackerud, "Library Use and Undergraduate Student Outcomes: New Evidence for Students' Retnetion and Academic Success," Portal: Libraries and the Acadey 13, no 2 (2013): 147-164. Designing Research Assignments

CCS Library strongly encourages faculty to utilize library resources available through CCS when designing assignments. Engaging students with the Library's collection early in their academic career supports student retention and connection to the CCS academic community. If you have questions or concerns about designing research assignments that engage the Library's collections, please contact Library Director Becca Pad at rpad@ccsdetroit.edu.
